TURNING BY-PRODUCTS INTO RESOURCES: SPREADING CIRCULAR ECONOMY MODELS IN THE SHRIMP INDUSTRY One of the key challenges in the shrimp sector today is not only waste treatment, but how to create value from by-products – especially from pond waste.
On April 10 in Can Tho City, VNF participated in the closing workshop on waste management models linked to business development in industrial shrimp farming areas, organized by GIZ in collaboration with the Sub-Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance of Can Tho.
At the event, VNF shared initial results from a solution to collect Molted Shrimp Shells, implemented with GIZ at Hoa Nghia Cooperative. This approach helps reduce waste in farming ponds while opening up a new direction – treating byproducts as valuable resources rather than waste to be disposed of.
The presentation attracted strong interest from farmers at Toan Thang Cooperative (84 members, 245 ha), with many highlighting its feasibility and practicality under local conditions. Notably, several farmers expressed interest in joining, indicating strong potential for scaling up in the near future.
What matters is not only implementing a solution, but ensuring its scalability across the sector.
