Vietnam Food Joint Stock Company (VNF) brings its shrimp-shell-based biodegradable fruit-protection bag to the global innovation forum

Agricultural plastic bags – an environmental challenge for the farming sector

In fruit cultivation, plastic fruit-protection bags are widely used to protect produce, but most of them are difficult to collect and slow to decompose, leaving a burden of plastic waste on fields and the environment. The need for an alternative material that both protects the fruit and self-degrades after use is becoming increasingly urgent as agriculture moves toward sustainable production.

Vietnam Food Joint Stock Company (VNF) develops BiarmO from shrimp-shell chitosan and brings it to the international forum

BiarmO is a biodegradable fruit-protection bag solution from Vietnam Food Joint Stock Company (VNF), developed from chitosan extracted from shrimp shells combined with plant-based materials – an approach that turns shrimp-industry by-products into a green material for agriculture. At GPIWE 2026, a program organized by UNDP under the Global Plastic Innovation Programme (GPIP), Ms. Dong Nhu Y, Project Officer representing Vietnam Food Joint Stock Company (VNF), introduced BiarmO and exchanged ideas with researchers, businesses, policymakers, and investors.

“The value of a solution lies not only in its technology, but also in its ability to connect an ecosystem so it can be deployed, scaled, and generate lasting impact,” a VNF representative shared after three days of work at the event. The sessions revolved around trends in the plastics industry, life cycle assessment (LCA), investment attractiveness, and market expansion strategy – factors that are important to BiarmO’s commercialization roadmap.

An initiative from Vietnam in the global circular-economy movement

On the final day of the program, the delegation visited enterprises in Shenzhen operating circular-economy models at commercial scale, illustrating the path from initiative to real-world implementation. With BiarmO, Vietnam Food Joint Stock Company (VNF) continues to pursue its goal of bringing sustainable solutions closer to practice through collaboration and innovation – proof that an initiative from Vietnam, originating from shrimp-shell by-products, can genuinely help address the global plastic-waste challenge.

VNF sincerely thanks UNDP, the UN Peace and Development Fund (UNPDF), and the Shenzhen Academy of Environmental Sciences (SZAES) for creating a meaningful platform through which BiarmO could be connected and refined via international cooperation.
