On December 16, 2025, following field assessments at shrimp farms and a series of technical consultations, Vietnam Food JSC (VNF),
GIZ in VIET NAM (GIZ), and Hoa Nghia Cooperative officially launched a pilot initiative for the collection and treatment of shrimp molt shells, contributing to the advancement of sustainable shrimp farming practices.

The pilot aims to improve the management of organic waste generated from industrial shrimp farming, thereby reducing environmental impacts. In parallel, shrimp molt shells are processed into reusable bio-based products for aquaculture, supporting the application of circular economy principles within the shrimp value chain.
During the implementation meeting, representatives from the Can Tho Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance, together with local authorities, acknowledged the practical relevance of the model, particularly its potential to support clean, sustainable shrimp farming approaches adapted to local community conditions.

VNF, GIZ, and Hoa Nghia Cooperative view this pilot as an initial step toward exploring scalable approaches to waste management in the shrimp sector, with the longer-term objective of transforming underutilized by-products into valuable resources.

Further information on VNF’s shrimp molt shell collection initiative and circular economy activities is available in the comments.

From your perspective, which regions or production contexts would be suitable for scaling this model?

We sincerely thank GIZ (Mr. Ngô Tiến Chương and Mr. Hồ Minh Phong) and Hòa Nghĩa Cooperative for their trust and close collaboration with VNF in the pilot initiative on shrimp shell recovery and processing.
